Big things were happening in sports in the early 1970's, and Secretariat was an important part of the story.  It was the dawning of the age of corporate sponsorship of sports, and the sponsors were especially interested in television.  One of the first big heroes they backed was Secretariat. Philip Morris executive Jack Landry was a horse racing fan. He saw in the amazing popularity of  Secretariat the chance to expand corporate sponsorship into new territories, reaching millions of Americans through television. Landry dreamed up the $250,000 Marlboro Cup Invitational. Run on Sept. 15, 1973, at Belmont Park, Secretariat defeated stable mate Riva Ridge in world record time.

The vintage Marlboro Cup Invitational saddle cloth offered for sale above is original to the decade of the 1970s.  It is original to this great race and a piece of American Thoroughbred History.  The saddle cloth is in perfect condition and was not used as the field did not fill to 14 in the year it was made. Dimensions are 32 in. x 44 in.  Stitched lettering and the large number 14 appear on both the left and right side of the saddle cloth.  Included with this vintage saddlecloth is a special bonus set of original Marlboro Cup Invitational photos (see below).  (Please call or email with any questions)

Jaramar Rain, is a filly by the leading sire Thunder Gulch.  She was at the top of her game having won the New Castle Handicap at Delaware Park.  In the New Castle, the victory was a runaway with the margin a growing 10 lengths.

It is difficult to obtain saddle cloths from the major championship races, they are retained by owners and trainers.  I am pleased to present the  saddle cloth of Jaramar Rain from the 2002 Gazelle Stakes Grade 1. Jaramar Rain  ran in the Gazelle with an overnight saddlecloth with paste on letters.  The original saddle cloth arrived one day late.   Beautifully embroidered in black and trimmed with black piping, this saddle cloth is a must for any serious collector. A dramatic color combination that is at home with any color scheme.  Lettering and number appear on both left and right side of the saddle cloth.  Dimensions of the saddle cloth are 38 in. x 42 in.
